![]() ![]() Even if they don't touch a single number behind the hood on 2 it'll be new just by virtue of never having an official localization. By contrast, these days so-called "boomer shooters" (not sure I like that term, very few boomers were playing shooters of that kind, though tons of millennials and Gen-Xers were) feel pretty new as the tactical sheen has worn off the COD template.Īnyway, I am looking forward to the Front Mission 2 and 3 remakes, though. ![]() Firaxis' XCOM wouldn't feel the way it does if it used an AP system the way Mythos did for X-COM: UFO Defense. I think strategy/tactical games are pretty vulnerable to feeling that way as a genre because they're so reliant on relatively small changes to hang their identities on. Maybe the stuff they did to update it and play with the numbers and UI helps it feel classical while not feeling crusty the way Front Mission 1st does. Reborn feels very classical the way Blade Runner is classical, so influential that it feels old because all the stuff that's come out since then has made its name building on it or subverting it. I think in that case, as Kazuma pointed out, "feeling old" it's more a philosophical thing. Other than the narrative and art style, Reborn's a different game under the hood, almost. The entire game balance was effectively given a do-over, with fundamental changes to its systems to account for some of the quirks introduced by remaking it for the PSP. ![]() Other than the graphics and a couple of QOL things, even the machine stats are basically the same, you can use a decades-old GameFAQs text file and do just fine.īut you can also say Tactics Ogre Reborn "feels old" too, despite the categorical fact that virtually every number behind it has had a major rethink. Sometimes a game feels old because it's basically a gussied-up port of a DS game, like this one is. This one's more of a retroactive addition as the full review on Siliconera is from Christmas Day, but I was thinking about it more, and about what makes a game "feel old". ![]()
